Terms to Know Before You Start
A few terms come up constantly once you start shopping parts, and knowing them upfront saves a lot of confused product descriptions later. Approach angle measures how steep an incline the front of the truck can climb before the bumper scrapes, and it's the direct reason some bumpers get replaced. A locking differential forces both wheels on an axle to spin together even if one is off the ground, a genuine capability jump over an open differential. Parts in this category ship differently than most online purchases, and it changes how long a full build takes to complete. Steel bumpers, sliders, and skid plates commonly weigh 65 pounds or more, so they ship via LTL freight rather than parcel carrier, with freight transit alone typically running 7 to 14 business days once an item leaves the warehouse. Backordered items, common on fully fabricated, powder-coated bumpers in particular, commonly run 2 to 12 weeks depending on the brand and the manufacturer's current production queue, a timeline set by the manufacturer rather than any retailer. Not automatically. Federal law under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act prevents a dealer from voiding your entire factory warranty simply because an aftermarket part is installed. The dealer has to show the specific aftermarket part caused the specific failure being claimed.
