Capable and Modular are real Ford factory names, not aftermarket slang, and mixing them up is one of the most common points of confusion when Bronco owners start talking bumpers. Here's what actually separates them.
1. They're finished differently
The Capable bumper is powder coated steel. The Modular bumper is black steel. It's a small detail, but it's the fastest way to tell the two apart in a photo or in a parking lot if you're trying to identify which one a Bronco is running.
2. Only one of them is built for accessories
The Modular bumper has removable end caps specifically designed to accept a winch, a brush guard, or auxiliary lighting. The Capable bumper doesn't have that flexibility built in. If you're planning to bolt on a winch or a bull bar down the road, that's a real factor in which one you want from the start.
3. Ford requires Modular if you're ordering a factory winch
You can't spec a Ford factory winch on a Capable bumper. If a winch is part of your build plan straight from the factory, Ford's own ordering system pushes you toward the Modular bumper to make that possible.
4. Fog lights usually come with Capable, not Modular
On trims where it's included, the Capable bumper typically comes with integrated LED fog lights and a factory switch already wired in. The Modular bumper generally doesn't include that, so if you want fog lights on a Modular-equipped Bronco, you're usually sourcing and installing your own.
5. Recovery points aren't the same
The Capable bumper uses recovery loops. The Modular bumper uses D-ring mounts, which owners generally consider the sturdier recovery point of the two. If you're actually planning to get pulled out or use a kinetic rope regularly, that difference matters more than it might seem on paper.
6. Modular sticks out further and adds more weight
Owners comparing the two in person consistently note the Modular bumper has better clearance and protrudes further from the body, while the Capable bumper sits closer and lighter. That extra reach on the Modular bumper is part of what gives it more protection in a minor front-end impact.
7. Trim availability has changed by model year, so don't assume
Which bumper comes standard on which trim has shifted across model years since launch, sometimes mid-year. A trim that came with Modular standard one year has shown up with Capable standard the next, with Modular as a paid upgrade. Always check your specific build sheet or window sticker rather than assuming based on trim name alone, since the factory assignment isn't fixed the way you'd expect.
