What Trail Turn Assist Does
Trail Turn Assist is a Ford Bronco system that tightens a turn on the trail by braking the inside rear wheel. Instead of both rear wheels turning at the same speed, the inside one slows down, and the truck pivots around it. That drops the turning radius well below what the steering wheel alone could manage in a tight spot.
How It Works
The system turns on with a button on the Off-Road Hero Switch Panel, above the touchscreen. Once it's on, it watches for a slow, full-lock steering turn. When it sees one, it applies the brake to the inside rear wheel automatically, letting the outside wheel carry the turn.
When You Can Use It
Trail Turn Assist only works under specific conditions. The 4x4 system needs to be in 4-High or 4-Low. Speed has to stay under 12 mph. The steering wheel needs to be turned almost all the way to one side.
The rear locking differential also has to be off, if the Bronco has one. That trips a lot of owners up, since it feels backward. The locker and Trail Turn Assist don't run together. Engaging the locker turns the system off.
Where Not to Use It
Trail Turn Assist is built for loose or slippery surfaces like sand, mud, dirt, or snow. It's not meant for dry pavement. Using it on a hard, dry road can cause excessive noise, faster tire wear, and damage to the driveline or brakes.
Turning it off is simple. Press the same button again, switch out of 4-High or 4-Low, or turn on the rear locker.
Which Broncos Have It
Trail Turn Assist comes on the full-size Bronco, not the Bronco Sport. It's standard on Broncos built with the 10-speed automatic transmission, and it isn't tied to which engine the truck has.
