How Do You Remove Bronco Doors?
Ford designed full-size Bronco doors to be removable using the supplied tool kit. Lower the windows first, switch off the vehicle, disconnect the door harness, remove hinge hardware, and lift the door straight up. Work on level ground with room to set each door on a padded stand.
What Tools Do You Need?
Use Ford's supplied hex tool, body protectors and door storage bags. The hinge bolts are removed with the provided hex tool, not with a 10 mm socket. A second person is strongly recommended for lifting the heavy doors. Have a padded storage area ready. Cover painted door edges, and avoid placing the full weight on the lower corner of the door or the glass. Before the first removal, test the clearance available between your parked Bronco and the storage area.
What Do You Do Before Removing a Door?
- Park securely, set the parking brake and fully open the window while the door still has electrical power.
- Switch the ignition off, remove items from the door pocket, and fold the front mirrors completely forward before removing the front doors.
- Fit the factory body and door edge protectors before loosening hardware.
- Identify the electrical connector and its locking mechanism at the door jamb.
What Changes on the Rear Doors?
A four-door Bronco has a separate set of rear doors and wiring connectors, so remove and label each one individually. Keep the bolts and protectors with the door they came from, rather than mixing hardware in an open tray. Front doors are bulkier and include mirrors on some configurations, increasing the chance of damage when lifting near the fender. Clear a path to the storage stand before disconnecting either door.
How Do You Disconnect the Door Wiring?
Open the connector access cover and release its latch according to Ford's instructions. Support the plug housing while separating it; do not pull on the wires. Protect the disconnected connectors from dirt and moisture. If the connector does not release, check its lock instead of prying the contacts.
How Do You Lift the Bronco Door Off?
With a helper supporting the door, remove the lower hinge bolt first, then the upper hinge bolt, using the provided hex tool. Keep both in the factory tool pouch. Use the designated lower lift handle and stable upper grip, then lift the door straight up to disengage the hinge pins. Do not let the door swing freely with hardware loosened. Put it immediately onto a padded stand or into a door storage bag.
How Do You Put the Doors Back On?
With a helper, align the hinge locations, lower the door carefully onto the pins, and reinstall the factory bolts by hand before final tightening. Follow Ford's prescribed fastener torque for your year; the 2026 owner's manual specifies 22 lb-ft (30 Nm) for the door hinge bolts. Reconnect and lock the electrical plug, test the window and locks, and check the door opens and latches without binding.
Can You Store the Doors Inside?
Ford offered an onboard door-storage arrangement for certain four-door Broncos. Use only a compatible kit with the required bags and restraints; don't stack unrestrained doors in the cargo area. Verify payload and passenger room before leaving. Ford warns that door removal is intended for off-road use and may affect crash protection, including side airbags; the rear occupant alert also does not function with the doors removed. Doors-off driving changes exposure to weather and road debris. See our doors-off legality guide and Ford's removal instructions.
